• Eating a clove (segment) or two of raw garlic daily, which may lower blood pressure 7–8 percent or so

• Getting enough vitamins D and C (deficiencies can raise blood pressure)

• Avoiding over-the-counter medicines and nasal sprays unless the labeled precautions don’t list a possible effect on blood pressure

• Losing weight if you’re overweight

• Getting regular, moderate exercise (check with your doctor before starting a vigorous program)

Before you get into a survival situation, ask your doctor about incorporating some of these things now to try to reduce your need for medication.

If you don’t think you have high blood pressure but haven’t been checked within the last year, get to a clinic to make sure. Hypertension usually has no symptoms; it just does its damage to your heart and blood vessels silently.
